Dance studios

The dance studios offer professional contemporary dance training for young adults with disabilities, talent, and the ambition to grow as dancers.

The programme includes contemporary dance, yoga or bodywork, and space for your own artistic research. Platform K currently runs two dance studios, one in Ghent and one in Brussels.

In the dance studios, you have the freedom and space to explore new ways of moving. Alongside learning from professional coaches and fellow dancers, we encourage you to follow your own curiosity and joy of movement. During the training sessions, we explore a variety of movement forms and gradually build towards contact improvisation. In this process, we not only discover our own bodies but also learn through collaboration, in groups or duos.

Your artistic individuality and personal journey are central in these training sessions. We strengthen them through dance technique and choreography. This way, we push boundaries, challenge ourselves, and build endurance. We take care of our bodies by training strength, flexibility, and balance through dedicated bodywork sessions.

Depending on your individual path as a dancer at Platform K, you train one or more days per week. Through different trajectories, you are gradually prepared for residencies, productions, and collaborations with choreographers.

Throughout this process, we stimulate reflection and self-reflection: we attend performances together and engage in conversation.

We work in small to medium-sized groups to ensure the right amount of guidance. Each session includes both a teacher and an artistic coach. For Platform K, it’s essential that you have the space you need to grow as a dancer. The Platform K team works with you to find ways to meet your specific needs – for example, by visualising daily schedules, translating from English to Dutch, or providing a low-stimulus space.
If you require more extensive personal support (such as for hygiene or personal care), we ask that you arrange this assistance according to your own possibilities.

Every dancer progresses at their own pace. Some move towards performing more quickly than others. You will be challenged in line with your own abilities and goals. Once a year, we organise an individual coaching conversation, where you and your dance coaches discuss your process and experiences. We invite you to reflect on your journey and what your time at Platform K means to you.

Dance trajectories

The Dance studio consists of three trajectories. You start in the entry group and gradually develop into an experienced dancer.

Entry level

The entry group is the foundational training for dancers who are new to Platform K.
You train once a week, focusing on discovering your own dancing body through contemporary dance. You can follow this trajectory for a maximum of two years.
Talent and motivation to grow professionally are essential.

When?
Training every Wednesday, except during school holidays.

What we do?

  • we train once a week
  • we organise two public showings per year
  • we attend two performances together
  • we plan one individual coaching session per year

Intermediate group

The intermediate group is for dancers who, beyond the basics, are ready for more challenges. The intermediate group trains both in the entry group and the experienced group. This is the next step for dancers ready to train twice a week. The sessions move at a faster pace, and you work with different teachers.

When?
Training every Wednesday and Thursday or Friday, except during school holidays.

What we do?

  • we train twice a week
  • we organise two public showings per year
  • we occasionally participate in additional projects, such as Dag van de Dans (Day of Dance), a dance event in Flanders and Brussels
  • we attend performances together
  • we plan one individual coaching session per year

Experienced group

The experienced group is for dancers who are fully committed to a professional dance practice. Alongside weekly training, you take part in workshops and are encouraged to explore side paths in other schools or dance companies. Professionalism, engagement, and autonomy as a dancer are key.

Here, you can further develop your dance identity: Who are you as a dancer? What do you want to express and embody? How do you define your own dance language?

When?
Training every Thursday and Friday (Open Friday), except during school holidays.

What we do?

  • we train twice a week
  • we follow workshops and external internships (with other dance schools or companies)
  • we participate in public performances (e.g. Dag van de Dans)
  • we attend performances together
  • we plan one individual coaching session per year
